Custom Instructions: A New Way to Communicate
Until now, ChatGPT treated each new conversation as a fresh start without any context from previous interactions. The new custom instructions feature will enable it to remember your preferences and information across conversations. OpenAI says this feature was developed in response to user feedback: “Through our conversations with users in 22 countries, we have deepened our understanding of the crucial role that guidance plays in ensuring our models effectively reflect diverse environments and the unique needs of each individual.”
OpenAI provided some examples of how custom instructions might be used:
- A teacher could specify that they are creating a third-grade science lesson plan, so ChatGPT would provide age-appropriate responses without needing to be reminded.
- A developer could indicate their preferred coding language, allowing ChatGPT to default to that language.
- Someone planning meals for a large family could note the need for six servings, so grocery lists would account for this.
Additionally, custom instructions extend to ChatGPT plugins. For example, if you use a restaurant reservation plugin, it can factor in your location information when suggesting restaurants to book.
Beta Testing & Safety Measures
OpenAI acknowledges that during the beta testing period, there may be instances where ChatGPT does not correctly follow or apply custom instructions. The system could overlook or misinterpret specific user instructions. However, OpenAI has implemented safety measures. The Moderation API prevents the storage of instructions that violate OpenAI’s content policies. Additionally, ChatGPT can refuse or ignore instructions that would lead to responses that breach these policies.
How to Use Custom Instructions
To enable custom instructions:
- On the web: Click your name → Settings → Beta Features → Opt in to Custom Instructions.
- On iOS: Go to Settings → New Features → Enable Custom Instructions. The custom instructions option will appear in settings.
Once you’ve enabled custom instructions, it will appear in the menu when you click your name.
Select it, and you’ll see two text boxes where you can answer the following questions:
- What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?
- How would you like ChatGPT to respond?
When you click on each box, you’ll see suggestions for various instructions you can input.
When finished, click the “Save” button at the bottom.
